Japan's BANDAI SPIRITS Company HOBBY Division recently exhibited the prototype of the latest product, "MG 1/100 Zaku Cannon (Z Gundam Ver.)", which will be sold exclusively at THE GUNDAM BASE, the official Gunpla flagship store of "Mobile Suit Gundam". The release date is yet to be determined.
During the One Year War, the Principality of Zeon military modified the Zaku II J-type to acquire high-mobility anti-air capabilities during their Earth Drop Operation. However, development was hindered by weight balance issues with the anti-air cannons. The plan was then shifted to a ground combat medium-range specification equipped with a 180mm cannon, thus giving birth to the MS-06K Zaku Cannon. This mobile suit was an additional setting introduced in the MSV (Mobile Suit Variation) project after the broadcast of "Mobile Suit Gundam". It didn't officially appear in animation until the sequel, "Mobile Suit Z Gundam". By then, the Zaku Cannon had been acquired by the Earth Federation Forces and modified for space operations, not only replacing its backpack with a thruster pack and beam cannon but also repainting its exterior in a blue-purple color scheme.
The "MG 1/100 Zaku Cannon (Z Gundam Ver.)" is a modification of the general release MG kit from 2008. While the molded color of the parts has been replaced with the characteristic blue-purple color scheme of the Z Gundam version, the armaments such as the 180mm cannon on the back, the missile launchers on both sides of the waist, and the Zaku Machine Gun appear to be the same as the general release kit, with only their colors changed to light gray. Other detailed information has not yet been announced.
