Bandai's GASHAPON capsule toy brand has released the highly acclaimed "Creature Encyclopedia Ultimate" premium series, featuring the "Giant Water Bug Display Stand Set" capsule toy. Available in three variations, the suggested retail price is 1,800 JPY per capsule (the regular capsule version is 1,500 JPY). Pre-orders are open on GASHAPON ONLINE, with an estimated shipping date in late October 2024.
The "Giant Water Bug" (Lethocerus deyrollei), also known as the Japanese giant water bug, is commonly referred to as "water horseshoe crab" or "water scissors" in Taiwan. It is the largest aquatic insect in the order Hemiptera, with adults measuring approximately 5-7.5 cm in length. This carnivorous insect possesses well-developed compound eyes and a fierce temperament. It uses its specialized, sharp, scythe-like forelegs to prey on fish, shrimp, frogs, and even mice—prey larger than itself. When it catches prey, it secretes digestive fluids to paralyze and dissolve them, then uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to consume the prey's bodily fluids. A bite from this insect is said to be extremely painful. Highly sensitive to environmental changes, it is also an important indicator species in aquatic ecosystems. It was once nearly extinct in Taiwan, but in recent years, there have been sightings in mountainous areas, and related conservation efforts are ongoing.
The "Creature Encyclopedia Ultimate (Ikimono Dai Zukan Advance)" series boasts top-tier size, sculpting, and articulation. Compared to the "Creature Encyclopedia" series, these products feature even more realistic details and exquisite paintwork. This latest "Creature Encyclopedia Ultimate Giant Water Bug Display Stand Set" includes three variations: "Light-colored Giant Water Bug," "Dark-colored Giant Water Bug," and "Newly Emerged Giant Water Bug." Each figure measures approximately 12 cm in length and features 25 points of articulation throughout its body. By utilizing CT scans of specimens, the complex biological details have been meticulously recreated, including the scythe-shaped forelimbs, needle-like mouthparts, wing textures, and the delicate quality of the thin wings, presenting incredibly lifelike details!
