After seemingly graduating from the Marvel Cinematic Universe with "Avengers: Endgame," directing duo the Russo Brothers stunned fans last year by announcing their return to helm the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Avengers: Secret Wars," bringing their previous screenwriters back with them. While many speculated Marvel Studios brought them back to course-correct the franchise's recent struggles, the brothers themselves have offered a different explanation.

In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Anthony Russo stated: "'Endgame' really was the end for us. It was only after a period of time that we started to think about what could be beyond the end. We have a very close relationship with Kevin [Feige, President of Marvel Studios] and Lou [D'Esposito, Co-President of Marvel Studios] and the whole Marvel team, and we've been talking for years, discussing many ideas. The truth is, we eventually stumbled upon an idea that excited all of us. You don't really see it coming until it does, and once it hits, you just feel, 'Yes, this is the story we need to tell.'"

His brother, Joe Russo, revealed that it was actually "Endgame" co-writer Stephen McFeely (pictured above) who first figured out how to adapt the "Secret Wars" storyline. "Before that, we had tried to come up with some ideas, but we just couldn't find the right story. I remember calling Stephen and saying, 'Hey, I have a crazy idea. What do you think if we all go back and do 'Secret Wars'?'"
Joe continued, "Stephen's reaction at the time was, 'Fuck no, I don't want to.' And then he hung up. But the next morning at 7:30, Stephen called and said, 'Okay, I've got an idea.'"
