GU's latest "OMIYAGE JAPAN POP! GU Souvenir Collection" has been making waves, and not just for its cool designs. The series, featuring T-shirts and tote bags themed around Japanese culture, was crafted by the renowned manga artist and illustrator Hisashi Eguchi. While Eguchi's designs instantly caught fans' eyes, the collection completely sold out on release day, sparking an immediate resale frenzy with prices skyrocketing to more than double the original retail cost.
Online, countless users lamented the situation, with many posting "It's already sold out!" and "Why did GU's Eguchi tees disappear so fast?" just a day after launch. Fans quickly discovered that the T-shirts, originally priced at 1,290 yen, were being resold for anywhere from 2,500 yen to 4,000 yen, well over twice their initial price.

Responding to the situation, Hisashi Eguchi took to Twitter (now X) to express his disappointment that the items sold out so quickly on release day without prior notice. He emphasized his wish for consumers not to purchase these goods at inflated resale prices, hoping that more fans could acquire their desired items at the original retail price. He stated, "I hope everyone can purchase them at retail price, allowing more people to own these items."
As the resale situation intensified, Eguchi repeatedly called on fans to avoid purchasing overpriced resold items. He hopes these products can reach as many fans as possible at a fair price. Meanwhile, many netizens have voiced their displeasure with the reselling behavior, urging an end to it, arguing that it not only disappoints genuine fans but also disrupts the fair distribution of the products.
