To commemorate the 45th anniversary of the "Mobile Suit Gundam" series, BANDAI SPIRITS HOBBY Division in Japan has announced the latest product from its assembly model series, "BEST MECHA COLLECTION," a collaboration with the design brand "fragment" titled "RX78FRGMT GUNDAM."
As part of the Gundam series' 45th-anniversary project, "Mobile Suit Gundam" is collaborating with Japanese designer Hiroshi Fujiwara, known as the "Father of Ura-Harajuku." Under his renowned design brand "fragment," several original design products personally supervised by Fujiwara will be released. A pop-up store, "GUNDAM45FRGMT," will also be held at the V.A. concept store in Omotesando, Tokyo, from February 1st to 24th, 2025.
The collaborative product, "BMC 1/144 RX78FRGMT GUNDAM," is based on a previously released general version. It utilizes modern color separation and part division techniques from 2024 to faithfully recreate the original "1/144 Gundam" Gunpla product released in 1980, even thoroughly replicating the packaging box art. The overall styling retains the unique, simple, and animation-like appearance of the old kit, while redesigning the overall part division and assembly structure, allowing the kit to reproduce the machine's colors with plastic molding.
Mr. Hiroshi Fujiwara's original gray color scheme is reproduced with new molding colors. Various shades of gray are used to express the layers of the machine's armor, not only making the sharp contours and engraved details more prominent but also imparting a stronger sense of weight. The shield part is newly manufactured with new parts, reproducing the fragment brand LOGO's two lightning bolt patterns with independent black parts.
