Long a fixture in the independent film scene, "Moonlight" director Barry Jenkins made a successful leap into commercial filmmaking last year with Disney's blockbuster sequel "Mufasa: The Lion King," which grossed over $700 million worldwide. Now, it appears he's keen to continue that trajectory, as Deadline recently reported exclusively that Jenkins is attached to direct a new sci-fi epic for Universal Pictures.

The film, titled "The Natural Order," is an adaptation of an upcoming sci-fi novel of the same name by Matt Aldrich, co-writer of "Coco" and "Lightyear." Plot details are currently under wraps, though it's known to revolve around the pursuit of immortality. Universal secured the film rights just last week, with Glen Powell already confirmed to star. However, the film adaptation may not directly follow the novel's published plot, as Deadline noted that Jenkins will collaborate with Aldrich to adapt an unreleased manuscript of the book.
