The Last of Us: Joel's Controversial Choice — HBO Series Creators Weigh In on His Decision to Save Ellie

Since Naughty Dog launched its acclaimed video game "The Last of Us" in 2013, the debate surrounding protagonist Joel's decision to save Ellie in the hospital, potentially sacrificing humanity's future, has never ceased. The moral quandary reignited with the conclusion of HBO's first season in 2023. Now, with the second season premiering on April 13, 2025, the creative team and cast are once again being pressed on the classic question: Was Joel's choice the right one?

In an interview with IGN, game creator and series co-showrunner Neil Druckmann and co-showrunner Craig Mazin admitted they "disagree" on the matter, though their views aren't entirely opposed. Druckmann stated that he believes Joel was right, adding that if he were Joel, he would hope to make the same choice to save his daughter.

Mazin, however, commented that he would likely do the same thing as Joel, but hoped he wouldn't. He explained that this moral tug-of-war is precisely what makes the ending so thought-provoking, as it doesn't allow for easy absolution.

Interestingly, the cast members offered more reserved responses. Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, Isabela Merced, cast as Dina, and Kaitlyn Dever, portraying Abby, all described the situation as "complicated." Young Mazino, who plays Jesse, offered a different interpretation, suggesting that Joel was in an "autopilot state," blacking out until after the event.

Mazin even likened Joel's choice to the biblical story of "Abraham and Isaac," highlighting it as a profound question of parental love and sacrifice. He elaborated that sacrificing a stranger to save the world might be acceptable, but when that person is your child, the calculus changes entirely.
