Since its game debut, the beloved IP "Pokémon" has introduced over a thousand unique creatures, each with distinct designs and elements. The in-game Pokedex entries offer glimpses into their lives, leaving many to wonder about the true scope of the Pokémon world.
Now, the official "Pokémon Ecological Encyclopedia" (set to release on June 18 this year) has unveiled a 10-page sneak peek, giving fans a taste of the academic-level ecological research crafted by actual animal博士.
This new "Pokémon Ecological Encyclopedia" is all about "observing wild Pokémon in their natural habitats." Ever wondered how over a thousand different Pokémon actually live their daily lives? What are their body structures like? What do they eat? How do they sleep? How do they interact with other Pokémon? And how do they move around? This encyclopedia dives deep into all these fascinating questions.
The book meticulously analyzes data from past "Pokémon Pokedex" entries, then applies a real-world ecological lens to uncover the "differences," "commonalities," "ecological patterns," and "interconnections" between each Pokémon. It's all presented in an easy-to-understand format.
How do over 1000 Pokémon truly live? This book offers a comprehensive analysis of these fictional creatures from various angles, including "physical characteristics, diet, sleep, interactions with other Pokémon, and movement methods." Starting from official Pokedex data, it delves into their similarities and differences, organized into four main chapters:
Chapter 1 | Pokémon Appearance and Form: Explore gender differences, regional forms, and the secrets behind evolution and form changes, revealing how a Pokémon's external appearance reflects its lifestyle.
Chapter 2 | Pokémon Daily Life: Discover the clever tricks they develop for foraging, how they regulate body temperature, how their routines align with day and night, moon phases, and seasonal changes, plus their sleeping habits.
Chapter 3 | Pokémon Interactions: Learn about their social dynamics, such as cooperation, deception tactics, territorial disputes, and group behaviors, alongside their coexistence with humans.
Chapter 4 | Pokémon Movement Abilities: Whether they run, swim, or fly, their diverse movement methods are a key part of Pokémon's charm. This chapter uses observation and comparison to reveal the ecological logic behind these abilities!
Among the pages revealed, one particularly exciting spread features a "flight speed comparison" of flying Pokémon like Dragonite and Garchomp! With stunning illustrations and detailed explanations, both kids and adults are sure to gain a wealth of Pokémon knowledge from this book!

It's worth noting that both individuals earned their Ph.D.s from the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Tokyo, specializing in animal behavior and ecology. This means the observational perspective of this encyclopedia is genuinely academic-level!
The "Pokémon Ecological Encyclopedia" is priced at 1,430 JPY and is slated for release on June 18 this year. The Pokémon Center has also announced themed merchandise for the book, which looks equally exciting.
