The recent broadcast of the latest "Gundam series" installment, "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX," has reignited discussions among fans, with the original series and its memes flooding the internet during its run. Even though "GQuuuuuuX" has wrapped up, the chatter and fan creations are still going strong. And speaking of the Original Gundam, a netizen recently scored something on an online auction that's guaranteed to make any true fan crack a smile.
The Original Gundam is packed with iconic lines, like "My own father never hit me!", "Are all Federation Mobile Suits monsters?", and "A mistake born of youth." Now, Twitter user pepperco (@pepperco02) managed to snag a "Char's Custom Ichiban Kuji Mobile Suit Gundam ~Red Comet Chapter~" C Prize from 2008: the "You Measured Me, Char! Measure" (測ったなシャア！メジャー).
To understand why this item is so brilliant, we need to rewind to Episode 10 of the Original Gundam. Garma Zabi, misled by Char, found himself under heavy fire from the White Base. As he piloted his Gaw Attack Carrier on a collision course with the White Base, he heard Char's communication and famously exclaimed, "Char... you tricked me! Char!" (シャア・・・謀ったな！シャア！) before perishing in the flames.
The C Prize, "You Measured Me, Char! Measure," is a tape measure shaped like the Gaw Attack Carrier. The product name is a clever homophone pun, as "測ったな" (hakattana, meaning "you measured") sounds exactly like "謀ったな" (hakattana, meaning "you tricked/schemed"). Some netizens initially thought it was a typo, only to realize it was a tape measure, leading others to join in the fun, telling the original poster, "You bought it, Char!!" Truly, Gundam—whether the series itself or its merchandise—is a meme goldmine.
