If you're into Gunpla model building, you've probably dabbled in all sorts of techniques: painting, cutting, weathering – anything to make your model truly unique. And with a little skill, Gunpla fans can even bring imaginary mobile suits or cross-universe creations to life.
Recently, Japanese Gunpla builder Wata Cider (@WaTaSiDa315) took to X (formerly Twitter) to showcase an incredible custom build. Inspired by the "RX-78-3 G-3 Gundam" from the novel version of *Mobile Suit Gundam*, they transformed the "HG 1/144 Red Gundam" kit from *Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX* into a G-3 Gundam that fits right into the *GQuuuuuuX* universe. This ingenious concept has won over netizens, who are absolutely stunned by the exquisite craftsmanship.

In the novel version of *Mobile Suit Gundam*, the RX-78-3 G-3 Gundam is the third unit in the RX-78 Gundam series. After Amuro Ray's RX-78-2 Gundam was half-destroyed in a fierce battle with Elmeth, he piloted the G-3 Gundam for the Battle of A Baoa Qu until his final moments. While its overall appearance is largely identical to the RX-78-2, the G-3 features a distinctive gray-white color scheme. It also incorporated magnetic coating on its frame drive sections to reduce friction and boost mobility.

Wata Cider's creative process started with a wild "what if": "What if a G-3 Gundam existed in the *GQuuuuuuX* universe?" Taking an HG Gunpla kit of the "Red Gundam" (originally associated with Char), he reimagined and rebuilt it into a sleek, subdued "gray version."
The once vibrant "Red Gundam" was completely repainted to resemble the G-3 Gundam, adopting a "low-visibility military style." Wata Cider opted for GSI Creos' military model paints, specifically "Kure Naval Arsenal Standard Color" and "Sasebo Naval Arsenal Standard Color," accented with light blue. The result is a subtly sophisticated finish, reminiscent of actual combat machinery.

You can spot G-3 Gundam elements integrated into the body's paint scheme, like on the chest armor and shield. The gray and blue base palette creates a harmonious look, with varying shades of gray interwoven without appearing too dull. Even the Gundam's eyes got a makeover, switching from the Red Gundam's blue-violet to a striking yellow, giving it an even more piercing gaze.

Compared to both the "HG 1/144 Red Gundam" and the "RG 1/144 G-3 Gundam," this custom build stands out dramatically. It exudes a distinct aura, packed with a post-apocalyptic vibe and military grit, setting it apart entirely.

It even caught the eye of many netizens, with comments like: "It looks so real, like it could actually exist!" "This color scheme completely transforms the whole vibe!" and "The first time I saw this color, it gave me chills – there's a truly unique beauty to it."

This kind of imaginative customization, blending different eras and concepts, once again proves the romantic adage of the Gunpla world: "Gunpla is freedom!" If you get a chance, definitely check out Wata Cider's other incredible works on X – they're packed with fantastic inspiration!
