Manga Artist Ami Shibata Reveals Bianca's "Sad Story" of Not Being Chosen in Dragon Quest V — Fans Relate: "Couldn't Bear to See Her After Picking Flora..."

For many gamers, playing Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride feels like living another life. Players step into the shoes of the protagonist – not a hero, but a regular person – and journey through birth, growth, hardship, and the restoration of their kingdom. It’s a sweeping, often tragic tale spanning three generations, and anyone who's played it knows it leaves an unforgettable mark.

Recently, manga artist Ami Shibata took to X (formerly Twitter) to share some behind-the-scenes tidbits from her work on the "Dragon Quest 4-Panel Manga Theater" series. She specifically highlighted a heartbreaking detail about the character Bianca, instantly triggering a wave of nostalgia for veteran players.

Shibata-sensei was one of the early artists involved in the "Dragon Quest" 4-panel manga serialization. She's currently working on a new book, "Dragon Quest 4-Panel Manga Theater: Fake Hero Book," slated for release on October 30. She revealed that her current editor isn't familiar with RPGs and hasn't even played the "Dragon Quest" series. This means she has to personally explain the origins of her comedic bits when submitting her work, which she jokingly calls "a hellish job."

When submitting her storyboards featuring Bianca, Shibata made sure to explain the character's tragic fate if she isn't chosen as the bride. "If the protagonist doesn't marry Bianca, she'll remain in the mountains, caring for her frail, non-blood-related adoptive father, living out her days there," she explained. She described it as a truly "heartbreaking" scenario.

In "Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride," players face the monumental choice between two potential brides. One is Bianca, the protagonist's childhood friend, two years his senior. She's bright, lively, fiercely righteous, and kind-hearted, with an unwavering devotion to the hero. Even if the protagonist chooses someone else, Bianca resigns herself to a life of solitude.

The other option is Flora, the adopted daughter of a wealthy man. Sent to a convent at a young age, she grew into a graceful and refined woman. She meets the protagonist when her father is constantly urging her to marry, and a romance blossoms. If the protagonist doesn't choose her, Flora will marry her childhood friend, Andy.

According to the in-game narrative, if you pick Flora as your bride in "Dragon Quest V," Bianca remains in her small mountain village with her adoptive father, living out her days alone and never remarrying. This plot point sparked intense debate among players back in the day and is still considered one of the toughest choices in the entire series.

Fans flooded the comments, recalling their past dilemmas: "After I chose Flora, I couldn't bring myself to go back to the mountain village to see Bianca QQ," "Poor Bianca...!" "That's why I always pick Bianca; Flora has Andy anyway," and "There was even an urban legend back then: if you chose Flora, an extra grave would appear in Bianca's family cemetery..."

These reactions prove that even after all these years, Bianca's character still holds a deep and complicated place in the hearts of "Dragon Quest" players.

It's no wonder that the choice between these two is such a big deal – even Takashi Kiryu, President of Square Enix, was asked about it by a shareholder at his first general meeting after taking office in 2023! It just goes to show the emotional weight classic games carry in their narrative design.
