"Gintama" Announces New "Yoshiwara in Flames Arc" Anime Film for 2026, Creator Hideaki Sorachi Quips: "This Work Has Become a Money-Making Tool"

Manga artist Hideaki Sorachi's hilarious masterpiece, "Gintama," celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. Beloved by fans for its unique blend of sharp-tongued humor, witty retorts, absurd gags, and surprisingly serious storylines, the series recently announced an anime adaptation of its spin-off novel, "3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei," set to premiere in October 2025.

But hold up! Today (August 16), the official Gintama crew dropped a bombshell: a brand-new anime film, "Gintama The Movie: Yoshiwara in Flames," is hitting theaters in 2026! They even unleashed the first teaser trailer and a stunning visual, instantly sending fans into a frenzy.

▼ It quickly became a trending topic on X (formerly Twitter) in Japan!

The epic announcement went down today, August 16, at the "Gintama 20th Anniversary Festival." Voice actors Tomokazu Sugita, Daisuke Sakaguchi, Rie Kugimiya, and other familiar faces gathered to spill the latest deets on the "3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei" anime. But the real showstopper came at the end: a completely new, fully reanimated "Gintama" movie, slated for 2026!

This new cinematic adventure will adapt one of the manga's most intense and thrilling arcs: the "Yoshiwara in Flames Arc." The story plunges into Yoshiwara Utopia, a dark, underground pleasure district ruled by the "Night King" Hosen, where light has been extinguished. The Yorozuya trio – Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura – bravely step into this shadowy world.

The teaser trailer is pure fire! Not only does Gintoki declare, "You can't put out my fire, no one can extinguish our flames!" igniting the entire audience, but we also catch glimpses of key characters like Tsukuyo, Seita, Hinowa, Kamui, and Hosen. And here's the kicker: fan favorites Katsura, Kondo, Hijikata, Okita, and Yamazaki, who weren't in this arc in the original manga, are joining the fray!

The video closes with Gintoki slowly rising amidst the flames, promising an ultimate clash of combat and souls – a spectacle absolutely meant for the big screen.

Creator Hideaki Sorachi also left a typically witty message:

Thanks to all your support, "Ginpachi-sensei" is getting an anime, and a new movie is happening too. It's been six years since the manga ended, and this series is still being squeezed dry by a bunch of dirty adults, turned into a money-making tool... As the author, I actually feel pretty happy looking at my bank account. The "Gintama" anime, novels, movies, live-action adaptations – they've all managed to be somewhat successful (or at least look like it), and we've held on long enough to achieve what you could call a "beautiful ending." But if things keep going this way, one day we'll face a spectacular flop.

So, perhaps a magnificent explosion, maybe due to something like Sugita's (Gintoki's voice actor) lower body issues, would be a "victorious ending" in true "Gintama" style. Please continue to look forward to "Ginpachi-sensei," the new movie, and Tomokazu Sugita's future endeavors.

Many fans are undoubtedly grateful that "Gintama" is still getting new movies! The official team promises more info in the future, so stay tuned!
