In a move that's pure Kojima genius, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, set to drop on June 26, 2025, packs a hidden cutscene that pops up on players' actual birthdays. Game creator Hideo Kojima recently pulled back the curtain on this epic easter egg, revealing a heartwarming twist: the filming day for the scene just happened to be the birthday of actress Elle Fanning, who plays "Tomorrow," turning the set into a real-life celebration.
Kojima spilled all the adorable details in a full behind-the-scenes clip shared on X (formerly Twitter). He explained that even after they'd captured a perfect take, the crew slyly used the excuse of "one more take" to secretly prep a cake for Fanning.
"I briefly left the set to grab the cake, and that's the take that actually made it into the game," Kojima revealed. He also mentioned a fun fact: the original actor for "Tarman" couldn't make it due to the pandemic, so Kevin stepped in last minute to complete the performance.
The behind-the-scenes footage shows a slightly eerie birthday tune playing on set. Fanning initially sang along with everyone else, only to have a delightful "aha!" moment when she realized *she* was the birthday girl. When Kojima appeared with a pink cake, she gasped, "It's me!?" Adding to the cuteness overload, the cake was even adorned with a BB-28 made of frosting or pastry, making the whole vibe even more special.
This isn't the first time Kojima has publicly showered praise on Elle Fanning; fans have long noticed his "fan-like enthusiasm" for his collaborators. But this latest behind-the-scenes peek not only highlights Kojima's deep respect for his actors but also gives players a deeper appreciation for the human touch woven into the making of Death Stranding 2.
For many players, the Death Stranding series is celebrated for its unique narrative and immersive atmosphere. This blend of real-life surprise and in-game magic, delivered through a birthday easter egg, not only adds an extra layer of delight to the game but has also become a hot topic among fans.
