Childhood Dreams Come True! This Gunpla Fan Transforms Empty Boxes into Epic Custom Hangers

Hey Gunpla fanatics! You know the drill – every time you snag a new kit, it comes in a box. For some, they just pile up, destined for the "shelf of shame" (or glory, depending on your perspective). But have you ever thought about turning those boxes into actual "hangars for your models"?

One Japanese X (formerly Twitter) user didn't just think about it; they made that wild fantasy a reality! They crafted an incredible piece, transforming a simple box into a custom hangar for their Gundam, and the internet is absolutely loving it.

The user, 午前の綠茶 (@teamorningtea), is a seasoned Gunpla builder and diorama enthusiast. In the past, his finished projects usually just went back into their boxes. But one day, a childhood memory sparked an idea: "As a kid, I'd often draw or modify the boxes directly, using them as bases for play. This time, I wanted to recreate that feeling."

He chose the SD Zeta Gundam because it was the mobile suit he felt the strongest connection to from his childhood. Not only was it adorable, but it could also transform into a Mobile Armor (MA), making it the perfect subject for his project.

▼ The kit in question: BANDAI's SD Gundam GZERO series Zeta Gundam

This DIY hangar primarily used:

0.5mm and 1.0mm plastic sheets

2mm round rods

Stickers from a 100-yen shop

The process was surprisingly straightforward: First, he used plastic sheets to build the basic hangar structure inside the box, then added details like mechanical arms to create that "hangar vibe." After that, he let his imagination run wild, adding small decorations like control panels, finishing with paint and stickers.

He specifically emphasized: "Don't overdo the details; leave some blank space so everyone can imagine freely. The hangar is just the background; the Gunpla is the star."

The moment the Zeta Gundam was placed inside the completed hangar, the user was overcome with emotion: "As a child, I just used the box as a base, but this time, I truly created a space that 'looks like a hangar.' Being able to recreate that feeling of turning a box into a universe was incredibly joyful!"

He also shared that this experience taught him "you can actually achieve this with drawing paper or items from a 100-yen shop," making it a perfect craft activity for parents and children. He hopes it can be an opportunity for more people to discover the fun of diorama building.

As this user's awesome example shows, you don't need to break the bank to create a fun and immersive display that brings the Gunpla world to life. If you've got a pile of Gunpla boxes gathering dust, why not give this creative method a try?
