Gunpla enthusiasts know the drill: painting, cutting, weathering – it's all about making your model unique. But the real magic happens when builders take things to the next level, bringing their wildest ideas or even cross-franchise mashups to life with their own two hands.
This time, we're spotlighting Japanese Gunpla maestro akasaha ( @akasaha1124 ). He took the commercially available "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX" HG 1/144 GFreD, piloted by Nean, and gave it a divine makeover. Drawing inspiration from the Egyptian god "Anubis," akasaha re-colored and redesigned the kit, achieving a stunning black and gold masterpiece that's earning major props online.

"Anubis" is a jackal-headed deity from Egyptian mythology, associated with mummification and the afterlife, often revered as the god of death. Early myths pegged him as the son of Ra, the sun god, while original Egyptian texts identify him as the son of Nephthys and her husband Set.
Depictions often show him with a jackal head, wielding a spear – a pose frequently adopted in character designs across games and anime.

akasaha's goal for this build was to create a "luxurious" Anubis, achieved through a mix of parts and a fresh color palette. He felt the original GFreD design already had an "Anubis" vibe, especially its head, which features miniaturized funnel cannons that resemble a jackal's ears.
However, the design wasn't without its challenges; he aimed to emphasize an "X" silhouette and give the overall lines more flair.

When you think Anubis, you think "spear," so akasaha made sure to equip one. He paid close attention to the grip and angle, crafting it from a plastic rod. Instead of just having it jut forward, he adjusted it to point downwards, giving the pose a much more imposing presence.

Looking at the finished product, it's impressive how much of the jackal god's essence shines through, even without major head modifications. The black and gold paint job exudes premium quality. Even the original beam saber and shield were re-painted, elevating their look significantly.

With the custom-made spear, Anubis's imposing aura is undeniable. Another key detail? The specially extended feet, which give the model a sleeker, more elongated silhouette and a distinct character.

He also offered a pro tip for this black and gold scheme: don't overdo the gold accents. A little goes a long way to avoid looking gaudy and maintain that high-quality feel. For the black paint, he used 2-3 different shades to prevent a flat, monotonous look. While it might be hard to spot in photos, he assures us it makes a huge difference in person!
