Netflix to Build "Catan" Universe: Live-Action, Animated Films, Series, and Reality Shows Planned

Netflix has officially announced it has secured the global multi-media adaptation rights for the world-renowned board game "Catan," with plans to develop a comprehensive multi-media universe based on the game. This ambitious slate includes multiple live-action and animated films, television series, and reality shows.

Originally titled "The Settlers of Catan," the game was created by German designer Klaus Teuber in 1995. Players take on the role of settlers, building settlements, developing resources, and trading with one another on an uncharted island. With its core gameplay loop of "trading, building, and settling," "Catan" has become one of the most iconic strategy board games globally, selling over 40 million copies to date.

According to a report from Variety, Netflix has acquired the global film and television development rights for "Catan." The streamer is collaborating with a roster of producers, including Asmodee Entertainment's Darren Kyman and Catan Studios' Pete Fenlon. Klaus Teuber's two sons, Guido and Benjamin Teuber, who currently serve as co-CEOs of Catan GmbH, will also be actively involved throughout the production process, ensuring the projects honor their father's creative vision.

This move follows Netflix's earlier agreement this year with Hasbro Entertainment to adapt "Monopoly," underscoring the company's continued commitment to expanding its game-based entertainment content. However, Netflix has not yet announced specific release dates or detailed content plans for the "Catan" projects.
