James Gunn’s next DCU film, "Man of Tomorrow," the follow-up to "Superman," has added Matthew Lillard, who plays Mr. Charles on "Daredevil: Born Again," to its cast. With his role still under wraps, fans have continued to speculate that he could be playing a familiar character from the comics.
While promoting Prime Video’s "Carrie" adaptation, Lillard spoke with The Direct and was asked whether comic book readers would recognize his new character.
Lillard called it a very James Gunn kind of moment and said fans should not worry too much about trying to find the character in the comics. Although he stopped short of revealing the character’s name, his response has fueled speculation that the role was created specifically for the film.

Fans previously theorized that Lillard would play the DCU’s Barry Allen, better known as The Flash, but Gunn personally shut down that rumor. Gunn has introduced original characters into DCU projects before, including Amanda Waller’s daughter and Mr. Handsome, so there is precedent for Lillard’s tease. Until the studio makes an official announcement, however, his role remains unconfirmed.
"Man of Tomorrow" will continue the story of "Superman," forcing the Man of Steel into an uneasy alliance with Lex Luthor as they confront a new villain, Brainiac. Rachel Brosnahan and Skyler Gisondo will also return as Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, respectively, while the film is expected to connect with other DCU characters, including Blue Beetle and the Justice Gang.
"Man of Tomorrow" is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
