Fifteen years ago, Disney Pictures brought together the golden duo of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp to remake "Alice in Wonderland" as a live-action film, which became a massive success, grossing over a billion dollars worldwide. Now, years later, a new film adaptation is in the works. However, this time it's not being developed by Disney, nor is it a remake of Disney's existing animated version. Instead, this iteration is being distributed by Universal Pictures, and the story concept originated from the actor herself.

Major entertainment outlets reported today that former child star and popular singer Sabrina Carpenter will return to her acting roots to star in and produce a new musical film adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland." Reportedly, Carpenter proactively pitched the film to Universal, presenting her vision over a year ago with a curated visual concept book to Universal executives.
After over a year of development to refine the concept, Lorene Scafaria, director of "Hustlers," has now joined the project as both writer and director. Producer Marc Platt, known for overseeing numerous fantasy musical films including Disney's live-action "Snow White" and the "Wicked" series, is attached as a producer.
