We've featured tons of incredible cosplay work, and in the world of cosplay, it's not just about nailing the makeup, costume, and the cosplayer's own creativity. Photography skills are also super important, and many shoots, whether in a studio or outdoors, really emphasize this.
Recently, Japanese cosplayer Hate (@444_hatena), who often portrays characters from "Land of the Lustrous," shared the behind-the-scenes truth of her "underwater cosplay" photos. Her reveal had netizens exclaiming, "So THAT's how she did it!" The ingenious method was totally unexpected and quickly garnered a ton of attention and praise.

For this shoot, cosplayer Hate transformed into "Lapis Lazuli" from "Land of the Lustrous." She submerged herself in a large water tank for the photos. The finished shots are absolutely breathtaking: her long blue hair floats dreamily in the water, tiny bubbles surround her costume and hair, and her expression combined with her luminous skin makes the whole picture look otherworldly.

But how did she achieve such a perfect "floating" look underwater? The answer is surprisingly simple—she weighed down her foot with a dumbbell! Since humans naturally float in water, she had to rely on the dumbbell to keep her in a fixed pose. It looks incredibly elegant, but underneath, she was putting in some serious, strenuous effort.

After the secret behind the shoot was revealed, everyone was shocked and flooded the comments: "I was wondering how she managed to sink, turns out it was this lol," "She's a genius!", "So dumbbells actually help you sink easier...", "Such dedication for cosplay, I admire your effort!"

And here's a super heartwarming little Easter egg: these photos were taken by Hate's dad! He's a photographer himself and was absolutely thrilled when his daughter's photos went viral on X.
It just goes to show that creating amazing work is never easy. Perhaps fellow cosplayers and photographers out there can totally relate! If you love Hate's cosplay, be sure to check out her X account for more of her fantastic work!
