Variety exclusively reported today that Disney is developing a new live-action series based on the popular young adult sci-fi novel series "Animorphs." Ryan Coogler, director of the "Black Panther" franchise, and his producing partner wife, Zinzi Coogler, are set to executive produce. First published in 1996, the series boasts 54 main novels and 10 companion books, offering a vast amount of source material for adaptation.

This isn't the first live-action adaptation for "Animorphs." Nickelodeon previously aired a two-season television series from 1998 to 2000. In 2015, reports surfaced that Universal Pictures was looking to adapt "Animorphs" into a live-action film. Five years later, Scholastic Entertainment and Picturestart officially announced their involvement as producers. It now appears the film project has been scrapped, with the adaptation rights reverting to Disney, bringing "Animorphs" back to the small screen.

While the "Animorphs" novels have been bestsellers in the U.S. for years, audiences outside the country are likely more familiar with the series through its viral memes. The books' covers, often featuring bizarre and unsettling "uncanny valley" transformations, have become a popular format for internet memes in recent years.
