A recent study published on ScienceDirect, a platform for academic papers, unveiled a new species of spider belonging to the "Rathalos" genus. This newly discovered arachnid has been officially named "Rathalos inagami." The paper, released on March 28, 2026, describes a sac spider (Anyphaenidae) species first found on the Indonesian island of Java in Southeast Asia.
But wait, does the name "Rathalos inagami" ring a bell?

For any Monster Hunter fan, "Rathalos inagami" is instantly recognizable:
"Rathalos" = The iconic flagship monster, the "King of the Skies," Rathalos.

"inagami" = Refers to the Elder Dragon "Inagami" from Monster Hunter Frontier Z.

That's right, this is no mere coincidence! The paper explicitly states that the species name is a direct homage to the Monster Hunter Elder Dragon, even noting that Inagami is known to appear in bamboo forests, perfectly mirroring the spider's habitat.

What's even cooler is that the genus name "Rathalos" already existed, coined by Chinese scholar Yejie Lin. This scholar is a self-proclaimed Monster Hunter fan and had pulled a similar move back in 2024, naming an eyeless spider species "Khezu" (after the infamous "White Wyvern").

The research team behind "Rathalos inagami" hails from the Indonesian non-profit academic organization Species Obscura, led by researcher Naufal Urfi Dhiya'ulhaq and colleagues. They openly declared on their official social media that the name was indeed inspired by the Monster Hunter Elder Dragon, Inagami.

It's wild to see real-world biological nomenclature get this nerdy and creative, especially in formal academic settings! Guess it proves that many Monster Hunter fans are indeed experts in the biological sciences. LOL.
