Illustrator NAGANO's creation, "Chiikawa," has taken the world by storm in a short time. After its anime debut, its unique style captivated audiences, leading to an endless stream of merchandise and cementing its status as a fan-favorite phenomenon.
And now, in a truly wild announcement, Kodansha's manga magazine Morning, released today on the 23rd, revealed a collaboration between "Kaiji" creator Nobuyuki Fukumoto and Chiikawa! It's a dream-like yet somewhat hellish crossover, with more details teased for the next issue, dropping on the 30th.
So, how did this bizarre pairing come about? Turns out, there's a method to the madness! Nobuyuki Fukumoto is currently serializing "Nikaido Hell Golf" (二階堂地獄ゴルフ) in Morning, and Chiikawa creator NAGANO's collected volumes are also published by the same editorial department. This shared home base paved the way for this epic team-up.
The official promotional image is absolutely drenched in Fukumoto's iconic "zawa..." atmospheric sound effect, with the adorable Chiikawa characters standing alongside what appears to be Kaiji, the protagonist of "Kaiji." The tagline itself is pure Fukumoto: "This collaboration... is overwhelming... devilish...!" The contrast with the cute characters only amplifies the impact.
Speaking of Chiikawa and Fukumoto's works, this isn't the first time their worlds have brushed shoulders. Back in December 2025, a Chiikawa plushie made an appearance in "1-nichigai Shutsuroku Hanchō" (One-Day Outing Hanchō), a spin-off of "Kaiji" serialized in "Weekly Young Magazine." At the time, NAGANO even drew a crossover illustration on their X (formerly Twitter) featuring Hanchō with Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi, which instantly sparked a huge buzz.

While Chiikawa appears super cute on the surface, its world can be surprisingly harsh. Fukumoto's works, on the other hand, are renowned for their psychological dramas set in extreme situations. When these two collide, they're an unexpectedly perfect match, almost as if this crossover was destined to happen.
This special combined issue also teases a "Nobuyuki Fukumoto × Chiikawa" collaboration sticker as a bonus. Of course, the official channels are still keeping mum about what other surprises this unique partnership might bring. We'll just have to wait and see what kind of sparks fly!
