"Star Wars" creator George Lucas recently discussed the controversy surrounding generative AI in the film industry during an interview with "A Rabbit’s Foot." Lucas argued that while the technology has its problems, it represents an unstoppable advancement, a stance that has drawn criticism from some fans.

"AI is going to make filmmaking a lot easier," Lucas stated. "It’s like sitting here saying, 'Well, I believe horses and buggies are the way things should really be. These cars break down, they need gas, they have all sorts of problems, and pretty soon they're going to make them into tanks, and then they're going to start killing people, and that's terrible.' But there's nothing you can do about it."
"That's progress, that's the future," the 82-year-old filmmaker added. Lucas also suggested that AI could be used to combat its own inherent dangers, such as detecting fake content, but stressed that anyone using AI for "illegal activities" should face punishment.

Notably, Lucas's comments stand in contrast to the views of some contemporary creators. Kane Parsons, director of "The Backrooms," previously expressed his reservations, stating, "I think I'm on the side of most sane people, if I could snap my fingers and make generative AI disappear forever, I probably would. Creatively, I get no joy out of using those tools, and to me, it completely defeats the purpose of creation itself."
Many fans reacted to Lucas's remarks by quoting the iconic "Star Wars" line, "You were the chosen one!" to convey their disappointment. However, others pointed out that Lucas's long history of championing CGI and technological innovation in cinema makes his embrace of AI as a tool unsurprising.
