Live-Action Series "The Silent Service" Season 3 Confirmed for Summer 2027 Prime Video Release, Moves to New York with Original Cast Returning

Kaiji Kawaguchi's manga masterpiece, The Silent Service, previously spawned a critically acclaimed live-action film, "The Silent Service: The Battle of Tokyo Bay," starring Takao Osawa, Hiroshi Tamaki, and Aya Ueto. Its sequel, "The Silent Service: The Battle of the Arctic Ocean," hit theaters last September.

It was previously announced that a third installment was in the works, but this time, it's not a movie! Prime Original is producing an exclusive series, "The Silent Service: The Battle of New York," set to premiere globally on Prime Video in summer 2027. The official teaser trailer has also dropped, revealing New York as the new battleground and hinting at the intense standoff between various factions.

The Silent Service is a classic manga from the mid-80s to the 90s, renowned for its submarine warfare narratives. Its plot delves deep into nuclear weapon strategy and international political relations, maintaining significant popularity despite its serious themes. It was also adapted into an OVA anime in the past.

Beyond Takao Osawa starring as the protagonist Shiro Kaieda, the first season boasted an all-star cast including Hiroshi Tamaki, Yosuke Eguchi, Aya Ueto, Tomoya Nakamura, Asami Mizukawa, Yusuke Santamaria, Aoi Nakamura, Takashi Sasano, Yui Natsukawa, Yoshikazu Sakuma, and Isao Hashizume.

The first installment of the series, "The Silent Service Season 1: The Battle of Tokyo Bay," premiered in 2024, followed by the movie sequel, "The Silent Service: The Battle of the Arctic Ocean," which hit Japanese cinemas in 2025. However, the third installment will be the first in the series to bypass a theatrical release, heading straight to Prime Video as a series.

After intense battles in the Arctic Ocean, the "Yamato" submarine sails all the way to the waters off New York. However, the U.S. government stands directly in its path, determined to prevent the "Yamato" from entering American territory. Meanwhile, the Japanese government, which has decided to ally with the "Yamato," nations worldwide strongly condemning the situation, American media grappling with their journalistic mission, and the United Nations, forced to re-evaluate the realities of international security, are all drawn into the escalating conflict.

As various "justices" clash, the story, centered around New York during the UN General Assembly, will gradually unfold into a major event that could shake the entire world.

In addition to Takao Osawa, several other key cast members from the series will also be returning.

Including:

Hiroshi Tamaki as Tatsunami Captain Hiroshi Fukamachi

Aya Ueto as journalist Yumi Ichigaya

Aoi Nakamura as Yamato First Officer Eiji Yamanaka

Kenjiro Tsuda as politician Jun Otaki

Yusuke Santamaria as Tatsunami Sonarman Sakae Nanba

Yui Natsukawa as Chief Cabinet Secretary Hitomi Sonezaki

Takashi Sasano as Prime Minister Toshio Takegami

Yosuke Eguchi as Foreign Minister Wataru Kaibara

These core characters are set to reappear, further fueling the conflict between the "Yamato" and nations worldwide.

In the teaser, Kaieda (played by Takao Osawa) addresses a television camera, stating, "Nuclear weapons exist in this world, more than enough to destroy the entire planet. If nuclear weapons are used, and a chain reaction of retaliation is triggered, humanity will perish." The video also showcases the tense situation as nations worldwide are thrown into opposition because of the "Yamato," setting the stage for the third installment.
