Jun Maeda, one of the central creators behind game studio Key and titles including Kanon, AIR, CLANNAD, Little Busters!, and Heaven Burns Red, announced through Key's official account on the 19th that he has been diagnosed with throat cancer. After carefully considering his treatment options, Maeda said he wanted to focus on his creative work. He has decided not to pursue active treatment and will instead receive hospice and palliative care while continuing to create.

The news has devastated fans of Maeda's games and anime, with many sharing messages of encouragement as he faces the disease. Veteran voice actor Megumi Ogata and singer milet both posted personal messages, while milet also recorded a cover of the CLANNAD song "Chiisana Te no Hira" in support of him.

Ogata previously voiced Ayato Naoi in Maeda's Angel Beats! She reposted Key's announcement with the following message:

“I think Mr. Maeda's decision is very much like him. But no, all right? It's still far too soon for you to become a resident of the worlds you've created. 'To give my life meaning, I will keep taking on new challenges.' Please take care of yourself as you continue facing those challenges. I'm begging you.”

She later followed up with another post, expressing her grief and concern for Maeda:

“No. You can't make the fans carry this burden. Please stay alive. I'm begging you.”

Her heartfelt plea for Maeda to stay alive reflects the sorrow and support pouring in from fans and industry colleagues for the creator widely known as a master of tearjerkers.

After learning the news, popular Japanese singer milet also uploaded a video of herself covering "Chiisana Te no Hira," a song from Maeda's acclaimed CLANNAD, along with this message:

“Mr. Jun Maeda. Right now, all I can do is wish and pray for you. I tried singing a song I've always loved and listened to countless times, and I realized just how difficult it is to sing. But I truly do love this song. I will keep praying for you. This song has long since become part of my life.”

Maeda has chosen not to undergo active cancer treatment and will instead receive hospice and palliative care, allowing him to devote his remaining energy and time to the music and story writing he loves, including completing his work on the mobile game Heaven Burns Red.

Fans have responded with grief and deep concern for his condition. Across the industry, messages of support continue to arrive for the creator whose games and anime have moved so many people to tears, with many hoping he can overcome the disease and continue delivering the heartfelt stories that define his work.
