In January last year, then-President-elect Donald Trump announced that he had selected veteran actors Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson and Jon Voight to serve as “Special Ambassadors to Hollywood.” The three were expected to act as his liaisons to the entertainment industry and help address issues including controversies over political correctness, productions moving overseas and the struggling theatrical box office. Stallone, however, recently clarified that the announcement had taken him completely by surprise—and that he ultimately declined Trump’s offer.

In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Stallone explained: “Well, it just happened. One night I was watching television when I suddenly heard them announce, ‘Stallone, Mel Gibson and Jon Voight have been appointed…’ I was stunned. I thought, ‘What? Seriously?’ If they had asked me beforehand, I would have told them, ‘This cannot be done.’ Hollywood is like a collection of feudal states, with lots of little kingdoms. You cannot simply walk in and tell the six major studios how to run their businesses. Mel, Jon and I are independent types who tend to do our own thing. I thanked him for thinking of me, but told him I had to decline because it would never work. Hollywood functions well and will continue to evolve. It is a huge corporate business, and corporate executives are not going to listen to me lecture them about finance.”
