On October 19, 2026, Key announced on its official X account that Jun Maeda, a creator affiliated with VISUAL ARTS/Key, has been diagnosed with laryngeal cancer and is currently taking time away to rest.
After repeatedly reviewing his condition and treatment prospects, Maeda decided to forgo active treatment in favor of palliative care, hoping to conserve his strength and focus on his creative work.
Jun Maeda, 51, is one of the core creators behind the game brand Key. His best-known games include "Kanon," "AIR," "CLANNAD," "Little Busters!," and "Heaven Burns Red," while his major anime credits include "Angel Beats!" He currently handles the original concept, main scenario, and music production for the mobile game "Heaven Burns Red."
According to Key's official statement, Maeda began experiencing discomfort in his throat in early spring. The swelling and pain grew increasingly severe as summer approached, and detailed examinations at a medical institution subsequently led to a throat cancer diagnosis.
After repeatedly reviewing his condition and treatment prospects, Maeda decided that he wanted to conserve his strength and focus on creating. He therefore chose to forgo active treatment and instead receive care centered on palliative medicine.
Regarding the future story of "Heaven Burns Red," Maeda said, "The main portions of the story through the conclusion of Chapter 6 have already been completed." He has also finished writing the lyrics and composing the music needed for the first half of Chapter 6.
Maeda had previously begun preparing a new music project as well. However, he acknowledged, "Knowing that I may not have much time left to continue creating, I changed my original plans. I now hope to complete the songs I currently have in mind as soon as possible and deliver them to everyone." The new tracks are expected to be released on YouTube at a later date.
