Veteran Japanese model kit manufacturer Hasegawa will release its latest kit from the classic anime "Metal Armor Dragonar," the CREATOR WORKS XD-01 Dragonar-1 1/72 Scale Model Kit, around December 25, 2026. Ahead of its launch, the company has revealed new details, including prototype images and a closer look at the runner layout.
XD-01 Dragonar-1 was one of the cutting-edge Metal Armors developed by the Giganos military under the designation "D-Weapons." After being captured by the Earth Alliance, it became the personal unit of protagonist Kaine Wakaba. As the first Metal Armor equipped with an AI navigation system, Dragonar-1 offers excellent mobility and specializes in close-quarters combat against other Metal Armors, though it initially lacks long-range capabilities. The addition of the dedicated Lifter-1 support unit later gives it atmospheric flight capability under gravity.
Hasegawa’s CREATOR WORKS XD-01 Dragonar-1 1/72 Scale Model Kit is an all-new tooling based on the original anime production artwork by mechanical designer Kunio Okawara. Standing approximately 10.6 inches tall, the kit faithfully captures Okawara’s distinctive head design and signature proportions. Hasegawa has also added original panel lines across the head, chest, waist, and other armored sections to recreate panel seams, maintenance hatches, and additional mechanical detailing.
The kit is molded in eight colors: white, red, blue, yellow, gray, black, clear yellow, and clear green. Marking decals are also included for the unit’s distinctive insignia. With no glue or painting required for basic assembly, the finished model closely matches the original design artwork straight out of the box. The red, white, and blue striping on the legs is fully reproduced through precise color-separated parts. Each of the head’s eyes uses an individual clear component, with a choice between clear yellow and solid yellow versions.
Although many of the joints use polycaps, the model still offers an extensive range of articulation. Highlights include shoulder joints that swing forward horizontally, sliding mechanisms running from the lower legs to the ankles, and deployable mechanisms for the four rear thruster nozzles. Accessories include a 75mm Hand Railgun LPS9 Type, Close-Combat Laser Swords, Close-Combat Assault Knives, throwing bombs, multiple fixed-pose hands, and articulated-finger hands for recreating a variety of battle poses.
