More than a century after F. Scott Fitzgerald published "The Great Gatsby," the literary classic has inspired numerous movies, stage musicals and television films. Now, it is heading back to the small screen for a radical new reinvention. Deadline exclusively reported on October 30 that NBC is developing a series based on "The Great Gatsby." Unlike previous adaptations rooted in the Roaring ’20s, this version will bring the story into the present day.

The project is being billed as a modern-day police procedural. Jay Gatsby has been reimagined as a devilishly charming detective with a con man’s knack for reading human behavior. Meanwhile, Nick Carraway—the novel’s veteran-turned-bond salesman and narrator—becomes Nicole “Nicky” Carraway, a decorated New York State Police detective who was born to be a cop but dreams of becoming a writer.

Simply titled "Gatsby," the series will be written and executive produced by Jake Coburn, whose credits include episodes of "Gossip Girl" and "Arrow," and "CSI: Vegas" creator Jason Tracey.
