LEGO Ideas 21330 Home Alone Unboxing: A Lavish, Playable House Packed With Movie Details!

LEGO fans, Christmas 2021 is almost here! Today’s set is not explicitly Christmas-themed, but it is inseparable from the holiday season: the LEGO Ideas 21330 Home Alone set!

Released in 1990, the comedy film Home Alone follows Kevin, a boy from a wealthy family who never seems to get along with his siblings. On the night before the entire family leaves for a Christmas vacation, Kevin gets into an argument with his brother, ruins dinner, and is blamed by everyone. He wishes his whole family would simply disappear—and when he wakes up the next morning, he really is the only person left in the house. Thrilled by his newfound freedom, Kevin begins doing everything he was never allowed to do before.

Without anyone around to care for him, however, Kevin gradually begins to feel lonely. At the same time, the Wet Bandits, a pair of burglars who target homes during the holidays, set their sights on the McCallister residence. Determined to defend his home, Kevin installs one trap after another, gradually transforming the house into a booby-trapped fortress that he can defend all by himself.

▼ The front of the box displays the complete set, including the McCallister house, treehouse, and the Wet Bandits’ van. The set contains 3,955 pieces.

▼ The upper-right corner features the English HOME ALONe logo and the LEGO Ideas entry number 38.

▼ The back shows the McCallister house opened from the side, along with scenes demonstrating its various play features.

▼ The side features LEGO-style illustrations of Kevin and the Wet Bandits, Marv and Harry.

▼ The instruction manual cover is playfully designed after Kevin’s battle plan, while the pages inside provide detailed instructions for operating the set’s various mechanisms.

▼ It also introduces the original model submitted to the LEGO Ideas platform by fan designer adwind, which received 10,000 votes of support.

▼ The numbered parts bags go all the way up to 24.

▼ The sticker sheet is packed with fun and adorable designs. The sticker for the Jordan cardboard standee is particularly great, replacing the original “BULL” lettering with “BRICKS” for a wonderfully LEGO-like touch!

▼ Let’s begin the build. Operation Home Defense starts now!

▼ The build is complete! In addition to the McCallister house, treehouse, and van, the set includes five minifigures: Kevin, his mother Kate, Old Man Marley, Marv, and Harry.

▼ First up is the van. Its boxy shape is highly faithful to the vehicle seen in the film, with stickers recreating the lettering on its sides. The chunky proportions are incredibly charming.

▼ The rear doors open so the burglars can store their stolen loot inside, while the roof can also be lifted for easier play.

▼ Instead of using a standard 2×4-stud layout, the front seats are built with 1×2 single-stud pieces. This gives the two minifigures enough room to sit side by side without their arms getting in the way.

▼ Next is the treehouse. A relatively small number of pieces captures its overall shape and snow-covered appearance. Look closely and you will even find a pair of scissors inside—and anyone who has seen Home Alone should know exactly what those are for!

▼ The ladder can be lowered.

▼ Now for the main attraction: the McCallister house itself! Let’s begin by viewing its exterior from several angles.

▼ The exposed pieces and ball-shaped controls around the exterior are used to activate mechanisms inside the house.

▼ One of the set’s best features is that the front opens like a dollhouse, providing easy access to the interior. Each floor can also be removed separately for even more convenient play.

▼ The front entrance is beautifully recreated, complete with snow by the doorway. The statue repeatedly knocked over by the pizza delivery driver is represented by a micro-scale LEGO minifigure.

▼ One of the exterior steps features the letter “M.”

▼ Let’s explore the interior one room at a time! First is the living room, decorated with a Christmas tree and stockings for a wonderfully festive atmosphere. It also recreates the toy-train trick Kevin uses to fool the burglars. Turn the knob outside the house and the train begins circling the room.

▼ A present bearing a sticker of this very LEGO set was originally placed beneath the Christmas tree. It was so adorable that we brought it forward for a closer look.

▼ The Christmas tree’s construction is also worth studying.

▼ On the other side of the first floor is the colorful dining room.

▼ The combination of the dining table, chairs, and rug looks fantastic. The table holds candles and a microwave dinner of macaroni and cheese, while the grandfather clock shows 9:00 p.m., recalling the moment Kevin prepares to put his battle plan into action. The figure mounted on the record player also rotates in sync when the train circles the living room.

▼ The center of the first floor contains the entrance hall and staircase. Kevin can sit on the sled and race straight through the front door.

▼ Simply push down this mechanism to launch him. After several attempts, however, we found that getting the sled to pass cleanly through the doorway is surprisingly difficult.

▼ Moving up to the second floor, we begin with the room of Kevin’s brother Buzz. It recreates numerous memorable elements from the movie, including the shelves Kevin destroys, a toy gun, and a chest filled with Buzz’s treasured possessions.

▼ Pulling the exterior mechanism causes the contents of the shelves to tumble down.

▼ The photo of Buzz’s girlfriend hangs on the wall.

▼ Open the chest and you will find a heart inside. Wonderfully absurd!

▼ The “KEEP OUT” sticker on the door perfectly captures Buzz’s teenage rebelliousness. His tarantula has escaped as well!

▼ The bathroom is another favorite part of the set. It includes a mirror that produces a real reflection, along with a step stool, toothbrush, faucet, and plenty of other tiny details.

▼ The most amusing detail in the main bedroom used by Kevin’s parents is the alarm clock displaying 12:00. The fact that the entire family managed to oversleep is still incredible.

▼ Lift the roof to reveal the attic interior. Kevin is afraid of this area in the movie, and a large spiderweb element suggests that people rarely enter it. The coolest detail, however, is the printed tile featuring Kevin’s battle plan.

▼ At first, we assumed the machine to the right of the bed was a LEGO-designed toy arcade cabinet. After comparing it with the movie, however, it appears to be a candy machine, despite the different placement and proportions.

▼ Here is the kitchen, complete with an island for the delivered pizza, an oven, and a refrigerator. LEGO even included the television playing the fictional gangster movie Angels with Filthy Souls.

▼ The set also recreates Marv poking his head through the pet door. Hilarious!

▼ The blowtorch that burns through Harry’s knit cap and scorches the top of his head is here as well!

▼ Glittery translucent pieces on the exterior steps recreate their frozen surface.

▼ An iron is hidden here. Turning the knob outside causes it to drop into the basement.

▼ This section represents the basement in the movie, although LEGO adjusted its placement to create a more cohesive model. It connects to the first floor of the main house, while the kitchen above lines up with the second floor.

▼ The basement also contains the furnace that looks like a terrifying monster.

▼ Press the light brick and it really comes to life!

▼ Kevin’s plane ticket is hidden in the trash can by the back door. It can stay there—he will not be needing it anyway!

▼ A zipline connects the second floor of the house to the treehouse. Attaching a minifigure and sending it across is incredibly fun.

▼ Finally, the minifigures! Kevin includes a scarf, blond hair, knit cap, and other interchangeable accessories. Kate’s hairpiece is also relatively uncommon, while Old Man Marley comes with his snow shovel.

▼ Marv and Harry recreate the burglars’ height difference from the movie, and even Harry’s gleaming gold tooth is accurately represented. Each burglar also comes with a wrench.

▼ Kevin, Kate, and Marv each include a wonderfully dramatic alternate expression.

【LEGO Ideas 21330 Home Alone Unboxing Summary】

Built from nearly 4,000 pieces, the LEGO Ideas Home Alone set is at its best when showing off its interior layout and clever design. It recreates as much of the McCallister house’s colorful décor as possible within a limited space, balancing impressive detail with the charming style of LEGO. Add in its interactive mechanisms and countless movie references, and the result is an exceptionally fun set to play with. The train and Jordan standee circling the living room are great, but the zipline connecting the second floor to the treehouse may be our favorite feature. After revisiting the movie at Christmas, building this set and recreating its famous scenes makes for a perfect holiday activity!
