Japanese toy company Qualia, renowned for its quirky and humorous creations, is set to release a new capsule toy series that combines "grey society" themes with adorable felines. Titled "Gureneko" (グレネコ), the series features 6 + 1 designs, with each capsule priced at 300 JPY. It was originally scheduled for release in March 2022.
The term "Gure" (グレ) literally translates to "grey" in Japanese, but it refers to individuals who exist in the "grey society"—a space between the yakuza (black) and ordinary citizens (white). These are often students or young people with jobs who engage in minor delinquent acts, operating in a morally ambiguous zone, also known as "grey organizations" or "delinquent groups." Qualia has brilliantly taken this concept and anthropomorphized cats into members of such a "bad boy" gang, posing with menacing expressions and signature delinquent stances that are both adorable and hilarious! The lineup includes: crouching Calico, White Cat, and Grey Tabby, as well as standing cats with their paws tucked into their fur: Grey Tuxedo Cat, Tabby Cat, and Black Cat, plus a mysterious secret chase figure! Displayed together, they exude an intimidating "keep out" vibe. Who would dare not hand over the cat food?
