CHRONO CROSS HD Remaster Revealed at Nintendo Direct 2022, Set for April Launch!

The highly anticipated Nintendo Direct 2022 unveiled a slew of exciting titles, with SQUARE ENIX announcing multiple classic game remasters. Among them was an HD remaster of the classic 1999 RPG, "CHRONO CROSS," slated for an April 2022 release.

Originally released on the PlayStation in 1999, "CHRONO CROSS" is generally considered a sequel to the beloved SNES classic "Chrono Trigger." However, the two games bear different titles, and "CHRONO CROSS" saw its character designs shift from Akira Toriyama to Nobuteru Yuuki. Furthermore, the story and combat elements also differed significantly from its predecessor, leading to it being less popular in Japan but gaining significant traction in Western markets. Yasunori Mitsuda composed the game's music, with many outstanding tracks considered among his representative works.

Unlike "Chrono Trigger's" focus on time travel, "CHRONO CROSS" centers on "crossing" between two distinct parallel worlds. Players control protagonist Serge and over 40 other potential party members as they traverse both worlds to unravel the cause of the dimensional chaos.

This HD remaster enhances all previous 3D models for a more beautiful visual presentation. Character illustrations are also faithfully recreated in higher resolution. Additionally, new special features not present in the original have been added, such as auto-battle, no-enemy encounters, and enhanced combat functions for easier play.

Notably, this remaster also includes "RADICAL DREAMERS," a text-based adventure game originally released in 1996 exclusively for the Super Famicom's Satellaview service. Considered a precursor to "CHRONO CROSS," its inclusion makes the full title of this remaster "CHRONO CROSS: THE RADICAL DREAMERS EDITION."

The game was slated for a digital release in April 2022. In addition to Nintendo Switch, it was also planned for simultaneous release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam. It remains unclear whether a Traditional Chinese version will be available.
