Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island HG Gundam & HG Doan's Zaku Gunpla Kits Confirmed!

BANDAI SPIRITS Hobby Division recently announced the commercialization of new Gunpla kits from the theatrical anime film "Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island," which premiered in June this year. The upcoming releases include the "HG 1/144 RX-78-02 Gundam (Cucuruz Doan's Island Ver.)" and the "HG 1/144 Doan's Zaku," though their release dates are yet to be announced.

This theatrical film is an adaptation of episode 15 of the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" series, also titled "Cucuruz Doan's Island." Despite being infamous for its notoriously poor animation, the original episode featured a deep and impactful storyline. Protagonist Amuro Ray encounters Cucuruz Doan, a Zeon deserter, on a remote island. Doan had witnessed his stray shot kill a child's parents, and when his superior ordered him to eliminate the child as well, he was overcome by guilt and deserted. He now lives a self-sufficient life with children on a small island in Asia. Whenever Federation or Zeon forces invade the island, he defends it using his unarmed Zaku, resorting to throwing rocks and engaging in hand-to-hand combat.

While this film is not directly adapted from "The Origin MSD" manga, mechanical designers such as KATOKI HAJIME and Kunio Okawara (山根公利) are involved. The RX-78-02 Gundam appearing in the film clearly continues "The Origin's" mid-production type design. Its aesthetic largely mirrors the HG 1/144 GTO version Gundam released in 2020, leaving fans curious about what new elements the Cucuruz Doan's Island version will include.

Meanwhile, Doan's Zaku's design sheets reveal extensive battle damage, with asymmetrical rust, peeling paint, and missing armor visible from its head, shoulder shield, skirt armor, leg armor, and feet. It's anticipated that many new molded parts or decals will be required to faithfully recreate these details. A key question remains: will its most iconic attack method, "rock throwing," be recreated in the kit?
