BANDAI SPIRITS Hobby Division, known for its diverse lineup of 1/144 scale Gunpla, today announced the latest addition to the 'HG (High Grade)' series: the "HG 1/144 RX-78-02 Gundam (Cucuruz Doan's Island Ver.)" from the theatrical anime film "Mobile Suit Gundam Cucuruz Doan's Island," slated for release in July 2022.
"Mobile Suit Gundam Cucuruz Doan's Island" is an adaptation of the infamous 15th episode of the original "Mobile Suit Gundam" TV series. While the animation in the original episode was notoriously off-model, the story itself was deeply profound. It follows protagonist Amuro as he encounters Cucuruz Doan, a deserter from the Principality of Zeon, on a remote island. Doan, haunted by the guilt of accidentally killing a child's parents with stray fire and ordered to eliminate the child as well, defied orders and fled. He now lives a self-sufficient life with children on an Asian island, defending them from both Federation and Zeon forces using his unarmed Zaku, resorting to throwing rocks and hand-to-hand combat.
The "HG 1/144 RX-78-02 Gundam (Cucuruz Doan's Island Ver.)" reuses the base kit from the 2020 GUNDAM THE ORIGIN version, but features updated molding colors for most parts, resulting in a brighter overall appearance compared to the GTO release. It also includes newly designed water-slide decals to recreate various in-show markings for the Gundam. Furthermore, the packaging will be a special edition featuring the main visual from "Cucuruz Doan's Island."
The weapon accessories are identical to the GTO version, allowing collectors to recreate both the early and mid-production forms through part swapping. It comes packed with a rich arsenal, including the Beam Rifle (early/mid-type), Hyper Bazooka, Beam Saber, Shield, and Shoulder Cannon.
