Japan's two major toy manufacturers, TAKARA TOMY and BANDAI SPIRITS, today officially announced an unprecedented dream collaboration product, the "TOMICA Mobile Suit Gundam White Base," scheduled for release in 2023.
The two companies have rarely collaborated openly in the past, while maintaining a healthy competitive relationship. This competition is particularly fierce in children's toys, where products like BANDAI's Toei Big Three (Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Pretty Cure) transformation toys, or TAKARA TOMY's Pokémon, TOMICA mini cars, Licca-chan dolls, and Shinkalion transforming robots, frequently battle for top spots on Japan's annual sales charts.
This collaboration between the two major manufacturers to release a product is truly groundbreaking news for the industry. TAKARA TOMY is bringing its popular TOMICA mini cars, a best-selling product for over 50 years, together with the robot masterpiece Mobile Suit Gundam, also born in the 1970s, to create the "White Base," the mothership piloted by protagonist Amuro and others in the series. The product combines a design acceptable to Gundam fans with safety for children to play with. One can observe that the main wings, antennas, and other features have had their sharpness reduced to prevent injury, and it is crafted with rich detail in the same size as TOMICA mini cars, making it both miniature and adorable.
The "TOMICA Mobile Suit Gundam White Base" is currently only announced for a 2023 release. Detailed pricing and product information have not yet been revealed, but a prototype is expected to be publicly displayed for the first time in late July 2022.
