Following the release of "21331 Sonic the Hedgehog" in 2022 under its "Ideas" series, originally designed by LEGO creator Viv Grannell, LEGO once again announced a total of four "Sonic the Hedgehog" themed sets yesterday (19th), with product numbers 76990, 76991, 76992, 76994! They are scheduled for release on August 1, 2023.
This new wave of "Sonic the Hedgehog" sets is sure to excite video game fans. Not only do they expand the play area and create a more complete world, but they also include Sonic's adventure companions: the fox inventor "Tails," the pink hedgehog "Amy" who claims to be Sonic's girlfriend, and animal friends to rescue from the game such as Flicky, Picky, Pocky, and more. Furthermore, "Dr. Eggman" appears in a brand new sculpt, distinct from the brick-built version in 21331. Coupled with play scenes inspired by the video game, the overall experience evokes strong nostalgia! It makes one want to boot up the game and dash through Green Hill Zone a few more times.
Each set also includes brick-built mini-villains, including the robotic insects Moto bug, Buzz Bomber, and the robotic fish Chopper, along with the robotic crab Crabmeat. Another major highlight of this wave is the transparent "Speed Sphere" part that can enclose Sonic, and a launcher assembled with Technic elements that fires the Speed Sphere by pressing it. Combined with the slope parts in the level designs, this allows for simulating Sonic's iconic spin dash, which is incredibly cool! This is another theme where the more you collect, the more fun it becomes – truly brilliant!
