Japan's official Mobile Suit Gundam Gunpla flagship store, GUNDAM BASE, recently announced the latest limited-edition products from Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket: the "Santa Claus Advertising Balloon 1/144 Scale Soft Vinyl Model" and the "Snowman Advertising Balloon 1/144 Scale Soft Vinyl Model," which were officially released on November 23, 2023.
While these two products appear unrelated to Gundam, they are indeed auxiliary items used in actual combat within Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. When the Zeon soldier protagonist Bernie decided to stay in the SIDE 6 colony to seize the Gundam NT-1 and prevent the Zeon high command from destroying Al's home with nuclear missiles, he set up numerous smoke screens and large balloons in the forest to engage the enemy. This interference tactic aimed to compensate for the performance gap between the Zaku II Kai and the Gundam NT-1. Ultimately, Bernie successfully destroyed the Gundam NT-1 but also died in battle during this festive season. Unbeknownst to him in his final moments, the Zeon high command had already canceled the nuclear attack, and the pilot of the Gundam NT-1 was Chris, the girl he had feelings for.
Both the Santa Claus / Snowman Advertising Balloons soft vinyl figures are produced in the same 1/144 scale as HG Gunpla products. They feature complete color painting to faithfully reproduce Santa Claus's facial features and attire, as well as the snowman's pot hat and pointed nose, resulting in a very charming appearance. In addition to serving as decorations for Bernie's Memorial Day, they can also be displayed with same-scale Gundam NT-1 and Zaku II Kai figures to recreate the final battle scene!
