Issued by BANDAI SPIRITS Company's HOBBY Division in Japan, the 'RG (Real Grade)' Gunpla series, which integrates exterior armor, inner frame, interlocking armor, and new technologies into the 1/144 scale, today announced the latest product from 'Mobile Suit Gundam', the "RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0", scheduled for release on August 10, 2024.
14 years after the release of the old RG First Gundam, Bandai has essentially completely abandoned the original 'Advanced MS Joint' integrated molded frame production, instead applying the design concepts from the highly popular 1/60 scale Gunpla 'PG UNLEASHED 1/60 RX-78-2 Gundam'. The 'RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0' features the same semi-monocoque body structure as the PGU version, assembled layer by layer from the movable frame and truss to the exterior armor. Furthermore, through precise part separation and color division techniques, it brings color differentiation and rich layering to different sections of the parts, creating an ultra-high precision inner frame structure.
The overall exterior armor styling is produced using Bandai's current technology, showcasing ultra-high-density detail sculpting on the injection-molded parts. In addition to common details like lines and grooves on the armor surface, even areas like part joints and inner surfaces that are not visible after assembly feature intricate internal structure sculpting. The complex head unit further achieves thorough part separation and color division for the forehead main camera, twin-eye cameras, vulcan cannons, cheek vents, the red lower edge of the eyes, and the chin. Furthermore, the armor parts generally, like kits such as the recently released "Hi-Nu Gundam", show no exposed part pegs, demonstrating a seamless, integrated design.
In terms of articulation design, a strong influence from the PGU version is also evident, adopting a design where "all visible joints can genuinely bend," expressing the realism of mechanical structure movement. Parts of the armor, such as the thighs, feature interlocking structures that slide with joint bending, while front shin armor parts have independent articulation, allowing for more natural and fluid movements. Simultaneously, within this structure, the Core Fighter is still housed in the abdomen, and a newly developed auxiliary joint mechanism allows the Gundam to also possess flexible abdominal articulation, with the Core Fighter capable of separating from the Gundam and transforming into a fighter jet.
Regarding armament accessories, it includes two Beam Sabers, a Beam Rifle, a Shield, and a Hyper Bazooka. Additionally, in August 2024, the "RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver.2.0 Weapon Set" will be simultaneously released. This product includes the Gundam Hammer, Beam Javelin, Super Napalm, another Hyper Bazooka, a curved Beam Saber blade, and a display stand, further expanding the Gundam's arsenal.
