DC Comics' "Absolute Batman" Unveils Stunning "Akira" Homage Variant Cover; Creators Detail Vision

Following the major DC Comics event "Absolute Power," the "Absolute Universe" is set to officially debut in October 2024 as part of DC's "DC All In" initiative. After the "DC All-In Special" was confirmed for an October 2, 2024 release, further details for the subsequent "Absolute Batman" series have emerged, including its release date, main cover, and a newly revealed variant cover.

Notably, the new "Absolute Batman" variant cover, illustrated by artist Javier Fernandez (@javierfdezart), clearly pays homage to the iconic movie poster for the classic Japanese sci-fi anime film "AKIRA."

As seen on the striking variant, the black "Absolute Batman" title text is notably overlaid with red Japanese characters spelling "バットマン," which translates to "Batman." The composition directly references "AKIRA," replacing the anime's signature red motorcycle with Batman's own bike, while the figure approaching the vehicle is depicted as the "Absolute Universe" version of Batman.

Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, the creative team behind the "Absolute Batman" comic, emphasized their intention to reinterpret Bruce Wayne's origin story within the "Absolute Universe" to craft a contemporary Batman. Despite this fresh take, they confirmed that iconic elements such as the cowl design and the Bat-symbol on his chest would be preserved.
