Director David O. Russell, known for "Joy" and "Silver Linings Playbook," recently made headlines with reports that his new biopic "Madden" would reunite him with frequent collaborator Christian Bale. Now, there's also new progress on another project Russell is developing: the series "Bananas." According to Deadline, Apple TV+ has won a competitive bidding war for "Bananas" and will distribute the series.

While plot details for "Bananas" remain under wraps, sources close to Deadline indicate that "Bananas" is merely a working title. The name itself refers to the term "banana republic," which typically describes politically and economically unstable countries, often in Central America, whose economies are dependent on a single export and are characterized by corruption and exploitation. The series' storyline is likely connected to this backdrop.
"Bananas" is confirmed to star Oscar Isaac and Ana de Armas, who will also serve as executive producers. Russell will executive produce and direct the series, but he will not be the sole showrunner. Reportedly, Carolina Paiz, a co-writer for "Orange is the New Black," will take on the showrunner role.
