The "It" film series, which grossed nearly $1.2 billion worldwide, is set to expand its universe to the small screen this year with the new prequel series "It: Welcome to Derry." While an official premiere date and multi-season renewal have yet to be announced, Andy Muschietti, the director of the blockbuster film series who returns to helm the prequel, has confirmed that they have already mapped out a storyline extending beyond a single season.

Muschietti recently revealed in an interview with Radio TU how "Welcome to Derry" draws elements from the original novel. He explained that the series adapts episodic stories that primarily reflect the chapters of Mike Hanlon's research, describing them as fragments from Hanlon's compiled data. Muschietti elaborated that for 27 years, Hanlon has been trying to understand Pennywise's origins, what created the entity, and who has witnessed it.

Muschietti then mentioned that the series has a three-season storyline planned. He stated that it will delve into past catastrophic events, such as the Black Spot fire, the Bradley Gang massacre—a group of 1930s bank robbers—and the Kitchener Ironworks explosion. He noted that each time Pennywise awakens from hibernation, a disaster occurs early in that cycle. Muschietti explained that there's a reason for telling the story backward, with the first season set in 1962, the second in 1935, and the third in 1908.

Andy and his producing sister Barbara Muschietti return as creators and executive producers for the series. The first season will consist of nine episodes, with Andy personally directing several. Bill Skarsgård is also set to reprise his iconic role as Pennywise. Whether "Welcome to Derry" successfully completes its planned three-season run will ultimately depend on audience reception.
