For ACG fans traveling to Japan, while Akihabara has long been a pilgrimage site, more and more have been flocking to Ikebukuro in recent years. The local government has actively embraced anime culture, hosting the annual "Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival." Coupled with the "Animate Ikebukuro Main Store," certified by Guinness World Records as the world's largest anime store, Ikebukuro has firmly solidified its status as a must-visit anime hotspot.
Yesterday (March 3), Tokyo's Toshima Ward announced the official naming of a north-south ward road in Higashi-Ikebukuro 1-chome as "Animate Dori" (アニメイト通り). This announcement immediately sparked a heated debate online, drawing both praise and criticism.

The 430-meter-long "Animate Dori" stretches from Hareza Tower (home to TOHO Cinemas Ikebukuro), passes through Naka-Ikebukuro Park, the Animate Ikebukuro Main Store, and Grandscape Ikebukuro, then crosses Sunshine 60 Dori, finally connecting to Green Dori.
Toshima Ward stated that in recent years, the anime culture around Ikebukuro's Hareza area has flourished, transforming it into a holy land for many anime fans. This has led to a continuous increase in both commercial value and cultural influence. Consequently, local residents and businesses proposed naming the street to highlight Ikebukuro's unique character. The decision was ultimately made to name it "Animate Dori," making it the 62nd officially named road in the ward.
As soon as the new name was announced, it ignited a lively discussion on social media, revealing two distinct camps:
The Supporters: "This name totally fits Ikebukuro's vibe!" "Anime fans are gonna love it, future photo op hotspot for sure!" "Animate is definitely a symbol of Ikebukuro, so the name makes perfect sense!"
The Opponents: "Naming a street after a corporate brand feels a bit off..." "There are other shops on this street, is that fair?" "What if Animate moves out someday?"

However, Toshima Ward has actually had a tradition of naming its roads since 1990. Iconic streets like "Sunshine Dori" and "Sunshine 60 Dori," named after the famous Ikebukuro Sunshine City, were also designated through this system. When they were first named, many people found them unfamiliar, but they have since become widely recognized as quintessential Ikebukuro streets.

While "Animate Dori" might take some getting used to now, it's possible that over time, it will become as iconic as "Sunshine Dori" and a representative street name for Ikebukuro.
One important clarification: "Animate Dori" and "Otome Road" are two different streets! The newly named "Animate Dori" is distinct from "Otome Road," which extends from the Sunshine-mae intersection to Higashi-Ikebukuro 3-chome. Don't get them mixed up!
