The term "oshikatsu," or dedicated fan activity, is probably familiar to anyone deep in idol or anime culture. It's all about passionately supporting your favorite person or series—collecting merch, attending every event, and even making pilgrimages to real-world locations. Whether you're into voice actors, idols, YouTubers, VTubers, or anime characters, it's a huge part of modern Japanese fandom.
Every now and then, a real-life story pops up on X (formerly Twitter) that's wilder than any light novel plot. Recently, a post about a miraculous romance sparked by the "Onsen Musume" (Hot Spring Girls) project has become the talk of the town. The gist? A fan fell in love with hot spring tourism because of the franchise and ended up marrying the daughter of an actual innkeeper!

For the uninitiated, "Onsen Musume" is a multimedia project designed to revitalize local economies by partnering with famous hot spring towns across Japan, like Kusatsu and Arima. The project creates unique "hot spring girls"—anthropomorphized personifications of each location—brought to life by famous voice actors and illustrators. By collaborating with local businesses and even gaining support from the Japan Tourism Agency, the franchise has successfully turned these towns into fan pilgrimage sites through concerts, meet-and-greets, and other live events.

▼ Doga Kobo once produced an animated promo video for "Onsen Musume," though a full anime series was never made.
The fan, who goes by Tomozu (@tomozu_onmusu) on X, explained that his journey began in August 2022 during a trip with his cousin to Ikaho Onsen in Gunma Prefecture. On the town's famous stone steps, he spotted a vending machine wrapped in art of the "Onsen Musume" characters. As a long-time anime and manga fan, his interest was piqued. He looked up the project and immediately dove headfirst into the rabbit hole.
He was stunned to find that the inn he was staying at, Ikaho Miharashikan, had an entire acrylic stand shrine dedicated to the Onsen Musume characters. Intrigued, he thought, "This is awesome, I should go on a hot spring pilgrimage!" And so he began planning trips to visit different onsen towns and collect "Onsen Musume" merchandise.
Tomozu says he met his wife at the "Miyamaso" inn in Bandai-Atami Onsen, Fukushima Prefecture—she's the daughter of the owner. He first visited in September 2022, just one month after discovering the franchise. The town wasn't even on his original itinerary; he only stopped by because it was conveniently located along his route. At the time, he didn't even know Bandai-Atami Onsen existed.
"Honestly, I wasn't particularly attached to Bandai-Atami on my first visit," he admitted. "But my favorite 'Onsen Musume' character ended up being Bandai-Atami's own 'Hagi-chan.' As my love for the character grew, so did my love for the real-life town. The 2D and 3D worlds just merged and I was completely hooked (lol)."

The Miyamaso inn is on the first floor, and the family's residence is on the second, which is where his future wife lived. "I stayed there over 20 times and we gradually got to know each other," he explained. By 2023, he was visiting Bandai-Atami 1.5 times a month on average. After they started dating, that ramped up to 2-3 times a month. "I practically became a semi-local, commuting all the way from Tokyo. That's the power of love, right? www."
He recently shared a photo of their marriage registration on X, writing: "Thanks to this wonderful twist of fate, I officially registered my marriage with the daughter of Miyamaso today! What used to be 'going home (lol)' is now actually 'going home (for real).'" He even added the hashtag "#ThankYouOnsenMusume."

This whole miraculous love story, born from the "Onsen Musume" fandom, feels like it was written in the stars—
From a casual glance → to a dedicated hot spring pilgrim.
From a random detour → to a Bandai-Atami regular.
From just another guest → to marrying the innkeeper's daughter.
A story like this makes you wonder, "Is this real life or a light novel plot?" Perhaps this is the kind of miracle that can only happen through the power of oshikatsu!
