In the 1970s and '80s, the late American action director Hal Needham helmed several box office hits, including "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Cannonball Run," which remain beloved by fans. "The Cannonball Run" notably boasted an all-star international cast, featuring Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Jackie Chan, Michael Hui, Farrah Fawcett, and Dean Martin. Now, Hollywood appears to be planning a small-screen revival of the film's iconic cross-country race.

According to a recent exclusive from veteran entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider on his blog, The InSneider, Taylor Sheridan, the acclaimed writer behind "Sicario" and the creative force behind Paramount Global's "Yellowstone" universe and hit series like "Tulsa King," is reportedly developing a TV series adaptation of "The Cannonball Run" with his production company, Bosque Ranch, for the Paramount+ streaming service.

This isn't the first attempt to reboot "The Cannonball Run." Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights in 2016, initially tapping "Tropic Thunder" co-writer Etan Cohen to write and direct. In 2018, Doug Liman, director of "Edge of Tomorrow," was reportedly in talks to helm the project, but ultimately, the film never materialized. Whether this new small-screen endeavor will successfully move into production remains to be seen.
