Since its debut, the massively popular IP Pokémon has introduced over a thousand unique creatures, each with distinct designs and elements. With every generation's Pokédex offering glimpses into their world, fans have always wondered about the deeper lore and how these amazing beings truly live.
Today (April 21), The Pokémon Company announced a brand-new official encyclopedia: the "Pokémon Ecological Encyclopedia"! This groundbreaking book re-examines and analyzes existing Pokédex data through the lenses of ecology and animal behavior. It delves into the ecological stories behind each Pokémon, focusing on key themes like "differences," "common traits," "patterns," and "relationships." Set to launch on June 18, the official team has also dropped a teaser website, giving fans an early peek.
▼ The announcement immediately shot to the top of X (formerly Twitter) trends, showing just how hyped fans are for this release.

The core focus of this new encyclopedia is "ecological observation of wild Pokémon." Have you ever stopped to think about how those over one thousand Pokémon actually live their daily lives? What are their body structures like? What do they eat? How do they sleep? How do they interact with other Pokémon? What are their movement capabilities? This encyclopedia will observe and analyze all these fascinating aspects.
The content will meticulously dissect Pokédex entries from across all generations, then apply a real-world ecological perspective to uncover the "differences," "common traits," "ecological patterns," and "interrelationships" between each Pokémon, all presented in an easy-to-understand format.

Leading the charge as the supervisor for this encyclopedia is Dr. Yoshiaki Yonehara, currently with The Pokémon Company. And get this: all the Pokémon illustrations in the book are brand-new, hand-drawn, full-color masterpieces! The artist behind them is Chihiro Kinoshita, a seasoned illustrator specializing in animal ecology encyclopedias.
What makes this even cooler is that both Dr. Yonehara and Ms. Kinoshita earned their doctoral degrees from the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Tokyo, where they specialized in animal behavior and ecology. This means the observational approach in this encyclopedia is genuinely academic-level!

For now, the official announcement only covers the release date and pre-orders. Priced at 1,430 JPY, the book is slated for release on June 18 this year. With two bona fide doctors using a scientific lens to help us rediscover the world of Pokémon, this encyclopedia promises to be full of surprises. Fans who love Pokémon definitely have something exciting to look forward to!
