If you've ever hit up Japan, you know the magic of "100-yen stores." They're treasure troves of everything from snacks to quirky gadgets, and sometimes, you stumble upon a real gem.
Recently on X, user @myaoyu3 dropped jaws by transforming a humble silver mesh sponge from a 100-yen store into incredibly realistic "chainmail" for a model! The internet went wild, with users exclaiming, "Who even thinks of this?!" and showering praise on their ingenious use of everyday items.

It all started with the X hashtag "#HyakkinGoodsMisuseContest." Myaoyu3 took a common silver mesh sponge – the kind you see everywhere at Daiso or other 100-yen shops – and DIY'd it into a super-realistic piece of "chainmail" (you know, the kind game characters or medieval warriors wear). The craftsmanship is so good, you'd never guess it was made from a cleaning sponge!
This "sponge chainmail" even fits perfectly on model figures, looking completely natural. It's so convincing, you'll be asking yourself, "Wait, is that *really* a sponge?"
But wait, there's more! Myaoyu3 didn't stop there. They also used a different type of kitchen sponge to perfectly replicate the texture of a "baguette cross-section." The photos they shared are mind-blowing – it looks so real, like an actual baguette sitting on the table. Seriously, who would ever guess it's a sponge?!
While the sponge-to-chainmail trick was already next-level, the "sponge baguette" idea truly takes the cake. It's baffling how their brain made that connection (lol).

Beyond the sponge baguette, they once crafted an absolutely legendary piece: the "Cheese Fondue Freedom Gundam." The inspiration struck while they were enjoying hot pot at home – a sudden spark to combine Freedom Gundam with a fondue pot. The result? An entire "cheese fondue battle royale" diorama, pieced together with models, that's both epic and hilarious, oozing with surreal charm!

When asked if they had a "special love for sponges," Myaoyu3 laughed, admitting, "More than thinking about cleaning, I'm usually wondering, 'Can this shape be used for a model?' I pretty much eye sponges with an evil (or maybe just intensely creative?) gaze!" (lol)
This level of DIY creativity is seriously impressive. Thought sponges were just for scrubbing pots? Next time you hit up a 100-yen store, give those sponges an "evil" once-over – who knows, you might just conjure up some medieval armor or spark your own wild creations!
