Last Thursday (April 24) was the day of reckoning for Nintendo fans, as the lottery results for the next-gen Nintendo Switch 2 were announced. X (formerly Twitter) quickly became a battlefield of joy and despair.
Many voice actors, VTubers, and celebrities shared their wins, but popular voice actor Yuichi Nakamura, known for his regular narration on "Nintendo Direct," had an epic meltdown on social media after failing to secure a console. His public lament quickly became a hot topic.
Nakamura's post declared he would "break up" with any friends who won a Switch 2. Among those he playfully targeted was none other than game designer Masahiro Sakurai, the creative mastermind behind the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. series. Fast forward to last night (April 28), Sakurai dropped a photo implying he would "erase Yuichi Nakamura's memory," sparking a massive online reaction and even trending on X!
▼ "Yuichi Nakamura's Memory" even trended on X that evening.
On the day the lottery results dropped, Nakamura's despair over not getting a Switch 2 was palpable. He screamed on X: "A...AAAA...AAAAA...AAAAAAAHHHH..." In his lottery-induced breakdown, he declared that all his friends who won should be unfriended.
He even went after Sakurai, commenting on his winning post. Sakurai's legendary reply? "Quick, use that memory-erasing light!"
(By the way, as you can see, Sakurai also participated in the lottery just like everyone else; he just opted for the multi-language version.)
A few days later, Sakurai delivered on his promise, posting a photo of himself wielding what looks suspiciously like a "Men in Black" memory eraser, pointed directly at Nakamura. Guess Sakurai wasn't kidding around, huh? LOL.
This hilarious exchange immediately went viral, with netizens praising their awesome friendship and Sakurai's playful side. It just goes to show how much fun these two have together!
While Yuichi Nakamura's "breakup" joke over not winning a Switch 2 certainly stirred up some social media buzz and highlighted his wide circle of friends, here's hoping he has better luck in the second round of the lottery – without the epic meltdown this time!
