Nintendo Unveils New "Battery Saver Mode" for Switch 2, Limits Charging to ~90%

Nintendo has officially announced a brand-new battery protection feature for its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console: a "Battery Saver Mode" that limits charging to approximately 90%. This handy option will be built directly into the system settings, giving players the flexibility to toggle it on or off as they see fit.

The primary goal of this feature is to extend the battery's overall lifespan by preventing it from constantly sitting at a full 100% charge, which can lead to capacity degradation over time. Nintendo acknowledges that enabling this mode will slightly reduce the console's playtime when unplugged. However, the trade-off is a significant slowdown in battery performance decline during long-term use. While the feature aims to cap charging at around 90%, the system may occasionally perform a full 100% charge to ensure accurate battery level readings.

This marks a first for Nintendo's gaming consoles and handhelds, though similar "battery health" or "extended lifespan" settings have become common on other smart devices, including various laptops and smartphones.

The Switch 2 is slated for a global launch on June 5, 2025. Nintendo projects the new console will sell 15 million units in its first fiscal year, with sales expected to outpace the original Switch's initial performance. The company also emphasized that the Switch 2 is currently unaffected by supply chain issues or tariff increases, ensuring stable market availability.

The inclusion of this Battery Saver Mode reflects Nintendo's commitment to player usage habits and device longevity, offering enhanced protection for the console's long-term health. For savvy players who prioritize device maintenance and environmental consciousness, this practical upgrade is undoubtedly something to look forward to.
