Hideo Kojima's highly anticipated Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to land on PS5 on June 25, 2025. While the game hasn't officially launched, internal tests are already buzzing with positive feedback, reportedly even outperforming its predecessor. Yet, in a recent interview with UK's Edge magazine, Kojima revealed he's not exactly aiming to "please the mass market."
"Of course, I want people to play my games, so to some extent, I have to listen to player feedback," Kojima stated. "But I'm not interested in creating a game everyone will love."

He admitted that past game tests often yielded polarizing results: four out of ten loved it, six hated it. "For me, that's a good balance," he mused.
However, the overwhelmingly positive reactions to Death Stranding 2's tests prompted a surprising response from Kojima. "Sony's thrilled, of course, but honestly, I was hoping for a bit more controversy," Kojima added. "I don't want to make some blockbuster needing 80% approval. Mass market appeal? Millions of sales? Not my game."
Addressing the constant external pressure for him to return to his Metal Gear Solid roots, Kojima also revealed this became the catalyst for his new project, Physint.
"When I was sick during the pandemic, I deeply felt that many fans wanted me to make another spy game," he continued. "I brought the concept to Sony, and they were incredibly supportive, so we decided to develop it together."
Furthermore, Death Stranding 2's combat and stealth systems have drawn comparisons to Metal Gear Solid. On this, Kojima commented, "We often discuss amongst ourselves: Is this too much like Metal Gear? But it's not intentional imitation; it's a natural evolution."
