Wondering if you can jump straight into Death Stranding 2: On the Beach without tackling the original? Norman Reedus, who plays protagonist Sam Porter Bridges, has some insights from a recent IGN interview that might just put your mind at ease.

Reedus revealed that the upcoming sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, boasts significant improvements in its narrative structure and pacing. He promises more action and clearer objectives, making it easier for newcomers to dive in, even if they haven't played the first game or fully grasped its intricacies.
Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding series is renowned for its unique storytelling, philosophical depth, and surreal elements. Players navigate a post-apocalyptic world as Sam, a courier tasked with reconnecting fragmented societies, often traversing the "Beach," a liminal space between life and death.
However, the first game was also packed with enigmatic concepts—think BBs in jars and grenades made from bodily fluids—leaving many players scratching their heads even after completing it.

Reedus himself admitted to being puzzled by the original's plot, but he's seen a narrative evolution in the sequel. "This time, I understand what's happening a lot more," he shared. "There's a lot more action, and there's a lot more clear objectives." He then quipped, "Nobody understands what Kojima's thinking. He's just such a madman, but he has so many brilliant ideas."
Additionally, Reedus expressed an open mind about the upcoming Death Stranding film adaptation, stating he'd be happy to return if the opportunity arose. However, with the movie still in early development, plot details are scarce, and there's a possibility it might not even feature Sam, instead exploring an entirely new storyline.
Death Stranding 2 is slated for a PlayStation 5 exclusive release on June 26, 2025. But with Kojima emphasizing he won't personally direct a third installment, this sequel might just be Sam's final journey.
